Shrewsbury Homes has been building properties in Shropshire since 2000, and based in Shrewsbury itself, it’s no secret that we are big fans of the local community. Full of wonderful people and places, the town combines rich history with stunning countryside, bustling culture and community events.
We consider it our mission to give back and benefit Shrewsbury, whether that be through using local suppliers or through supporting local businesses and events. For instance, we work closely with Far & Harris, the family plumbing merchants based in Shrewsbury, and last summer we sponsored a successful outdoor film evening in the Quarry.
Springs and summers in Shrewsbury are always packed with community events, so we’ve rounded up some of the best to give you just a taste of what being a Salopian is all about.
The big ones
These are the events that draw thousands to the town without fail. The annual Shropshire County Agricultural Show has been running at the Greenhous West Mid Showground for over 140 years. On Saturday 27th May the venue will play host to motorbike displays, horseback polo, parades, food stalls and live music.
The Shrewsbury Food Festival, Saturday 24th to Sunday 25th June, celebrates local restaurants, producers and craftspeople in a family-friendly environment, drawing crowds from across the West Midlands and Wales. The weekend promises 200 stalls, top chefs, a live music stage and free children’s entertainment.
Shrewsbury Flower Show in the Quarry is one of the UK’s premier flower show events, attracting top exhibitors from all over the country and offering lectures from horticultural experts, a food hall, live entertainment and stunning fireworks to top the weekend off. This year the it’s being held on Saturday 11th and Sunday 12th August, and confirmed headline acts include celebrity chef John Torode and celebrity gardeners Joe Swift and Penny Meadmore.
Just for children
Do you have little ones and teens to entertain over the Easter and summer holidays? Shrewsbury Children’s Bookfest returns for 2017, featuring storytelling, workshops across the town as well as a free, drop-in event on the Square on Saturday 29th April. Then, just a few weeks later, there’s the Shropshire Kid’s Festival, Saturday 13th to Sunday 14th May in the Quarry Park. Suitable for babies and children up to age fourteen, there will be over 130 activities for them to try out, including bubble football, a zoo and donkey rides!
Another favourite with both children and parents is the Shrewsbury Carnival, this year held on Saturday 17th June. Enjoy the carnival show in the Quarry followed by the always-colourful parade. This year theme is Carnival Goes Around The World.
Thank you for the music
Shrewsbury has a strong musical scene, as its many festivals prove. On Saturday the 1st April, the Big Busk 2017 celebrates its fifth year running, bringing a wide range of performers and artists to the town’s beautiful medieval centre. The Big Busk was established as a charity event in aid of the Shrewsbury Ark, an organisation which provides support for people who are homeless or vulnerable.
Shrewsbury Folk Festival gathers the finest acts from across the UK and combines them with four sound stages, a dance tent, a campsite and plenty of shops, caterers and bars, to deliver four unforgettable days of music and entertainment. Running from Friday 25th to Monday 28th August, you can’t imagine how much you will discover!
